The Dry Bulk Division carries a wide range of products for a variety of long-term and spot customers. These cargoes include petroleum coke, coal, fertilizers, grains, scrap metal, steel plates, steel coils, sugar, crushed glass and numerous other commodities. While Moran typically transports bulk cargoes, the large, open holds of its dry bulk barges are well suited to finished goods too. In a shipment to Santos, Brazil, for example, Moran delivered 16 locomotive engines and returned with windmill blades bound for the United States. Three of Moran's five dry bulk barges are of a unique, single-hold vessel design called the Bridgeport class. The single hold design eliminates cross members and bulkheads, enabling these vessels to combine the cargo hold accessibility of inland hopper barges with the carrying capacity and strength of oceangoing vessels. The Bridgeport, the first and largest single hold vessel of its kind, was designed and built by Moran in 1986, to meet the special coal transportation needs of a utility. The design proved to be highly successful in service, and the company later built two more Bridgeport class barges, the Somerset and the Portsmouth. |
