Good Samaritan LNG Tugs Help Extinguish Maryland Pier Fire When a raging fire broke out on April 28, 2009 and engulfed a Navy vessel and a Patuxent River, Maryland U.S. Navy pier in flames, two LNG FiFi Class 1 (firefighting) tugboats promptly assisted as good Samaritans by playing a critical role in extinguishing the blaze before it made its way ashore. The tugs, which are permanently stationed in the vicinity to serve LNG shipping activities at Cove Point, Maryland, were given the go-ahead by the LNG company to take action upon being notified of the severity of the incident. When the tugs arrived at the scene, local fire crews were attempting to put out the blaze. One tug crew assisted by putting out the pier fire, which the land-based crews could not access due to the size of the fire. The second tug crew was able to pull the Navy ship away from the pier while firefighters put out the fire. No one was hurt. "Without these tugs and the forbearance of our LNG customers in allowing us to take action, it would have been a far more serious issue. The fire would have jumped the line and gone ashore. There were a lot of flames," said Ned Moran, a Managing Director of Chesapeake Energy Services (CES), the tug company contracted by the Shippers serving the LNG Terminal. "The United States Navy, the U.S . Coast Guard and the local first responders were appreciative of the service provided by our tugs," he continued. Having FiFi capable tugs in the local vicinity due to the presence of LNG facilities is a great benefit to on-water fire fighting capability which is often overlooked as one of the many benefits LNG operations provide to local communities. FiFi tugs have the capacity to pump in excess of 10,000 gallons of water per minute. This is not the first time FiFi tugs have assisted in putting out a local fire. In 2006, when the historic Bowen's Inn and the Lighthouse Inn caught fire on Solomon's Island in Calvert County Maryland, CES also sent two tugs to the scene and helped to significantly decrease the damage and the amount of time it would have taken for land-based crews to put out the fire.
