Norfolk: Private Tugs: Lots of Pull Press Release May 2, 2001 The Navy is spending millions of dollars to rent tugboats. The new, multidirectional Z-drive tugs will not only save the Navy money, but get the job done quicker and better. By John Ruddy Soundings Newspaper
"Pirate ship coming up on the starboard side!" Tim Ballard shouted over the din of the tugboat Karen
Moran. The "pirate ship" lumbering along the waters off Naval Station Norfolk was actually a Navy tugboat,
but Ballard just couldn't resist. The tug's gray paint and bumpers, chipped, cracked and weathered, gave
it the menacing look of a rogue buccaneer vessel roaming the high seas for plunder. As the 109-foot tug
passed, Ballard looked starboard with a knowing grin. So did his shipmates Mike Parker and Gregg Williams. All three had once spent some time as active-duty sailors aboard those Navy YTBs, the Navy's designation for large harbor tugs. Now, they serve as civilians aboard the brand-new, spit-shined Karen Moran. One of eight privately owned boats that will help local Navy ships and submarines get to the piers, the Karen Moran is the newest of the state-of-the-art, highly maneuverable tugs that are replacing the Navy's aging fleet of "pirate" tugs. "This is the new generation of tugboat," said Parker, the Karen Moran's skipper. As a Navy quartermaster for 20 years - he just retired six months ago - Parker spent plenty of time on the old single-screw, unidirectional YTBs. "It's a thrill a minute out here on these boats," he said."We like to think of this as one big $5 million roller coaster." "We've put in our request for seat belts," said Ballard, a former Navy boatswain's mate who spent six months aboard a YTB and three years in port operations. |
