August, 2004 Ned Moran cited by Coast Guard for safety-promoting role with AWO Edmond J. Moran Jr., senior vice president of Moran Towing Corporation, earned a Distinguished Public Service Award from the U.S. Coast Guard in June in recognition of his work on behalf of towing vessel safety while serving as chairman of the American Waterways Operators (AWO). Moran, who took over as AWO chairman in April, was cited for "his tireless leadership role in improving towing vessel safety," by Adm. Thomas H. Collins, commandant of the Coast Guard. Working on behalf of AWO, Mr. Moran has traveled extensively throughout the country, developing and promoting a proposal for a new towing vessel inspection system, according to Adm. Collins. "Mr. Moran’s dedication and personal contributions are most heartily commended and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Coast Guard," he said. Ned Moran, who began his career with MORAN in 1971, has been involved with AWO since the early 1990s. He was asked to join the organization’s board of directors two years ago. AWO, founded in 1944, is an industry advocacy group that represents most tugboat, barging and inland towboat companies in the U.S. Moran, who took over as Chairman from Ingram Barge Co. president Craig Philip at the AWO spring convention in Washington, pledged, upon assuming his role to advance programs that encourage safety and accountability throughout the tugboat industry. Specifically, Moran said that he and the AWO leadership team are in full support of the U.S. Coast Guard’s request for an inspection program for the entire tugboat industry. "We think this would be a huge leap forward," he said. "It will help us to shed that label of being ‘uninspected’ which both the public and many people in our own industry equate with being unregulated and unsafe. We will become a better industry after we are all inspected," he added. |
