July, 2004 Newest 5,000 hp tractor tug from MORAN is slated to assist LNG tankers at Cove Point The newest tugboat launched for Moran Towing Corporation is a 92-foot tractor tug with 5,000 horsepower and one of the most advanced firefighting systems in use today. The James R. Moran was launched in June at the Washburn & Doughty Shipyard in East Boothbay, Maine. Named for James R. Barker, vice chairman and a principal MORAN owner, the new tug is the 13th tractor tug in the company fleet, and the 10th such vessel built by the same Maine shipyard. James R. Moran will be joining a sistership, Kaye E. Moran, with both tugs providing ship-assist work at the Dominion LNG importation and storage terminal at Cove Point, Maryland. MORAN has been providing state-of-the-art tugboat technology and service at Cove Point and other LNG facilities, using 5,000 hp tractor tugs, the latest support and safety systems and advanced firefighting training for all of its crews. James R. Moran, like its sistership, is built with an American Bureau of Shipping Fire Fighting Class 1 (FiFi-1) system which provides pumping capacity of more than 10,000 gallons of water per minute. The firefighting system also includes a self-drenching deluge system and a number of additional features. The 92-foot tug is capable of producing approximately 70 tons of bollard pull, generated by a pair of 12-cylinder EMD diesels, each putting out 2,550 hp at 900 rpm. MORAN’s work at the Dominion Cove Point LNG facility began in 2003. The Cove Point terminal is the largest LNG import facility in the United States. MORAN also provides similar service at the LNG terminal at Elba Island on Georgia’s Savannah River, and the company provides exclusive ship-assist service to arriving and departing LPG tankers on the Pisquataqua River in New Hampshire. |
