TV State of Maine Press Release July 27, 2001 The training vessel TV STATE OF MAINE made her first port call to the Port of NY & NJ on Monday June 25th, 2001. She made a fine sight with her midshipmen crew in white uniforms manning the rails as she sailed into the Upper Bay of New York Harbor. A New York City fireboat put on a water display of red, white and blue to welcome the ship to the Brooklyn Marine Terminalās Pier 7 for a three-day visit. TV STATE OF MAINE is the schoolship of the Maine Maritime Academy, Castine, Maine, founded in 1941. One of six-college level schools in the United States that train students as merchant marine officers and for careers in the maritime industry. New York was the last port of call for the 2001 annual training cruise that started on May 4th, crossed the Equator on May 18th and visited Natal Brazil, Galveston, Texas, San Juan, Puerto Rico, before the ship returned to her home port in Maine. Midshipmen at the Academy make three cruise on the training ship, operating the ship under licensed merchant marine officers, as part of their four-year program. The training ship was launched in 1990 for the Military Sealift Command as the USNS TANNER TAGS-40, as a fast oceanographic research vessel, named after Zero Luther Tanner a famous oceanographer. It only served MSC until 1993 when it was laid up from an engine casualty. In 1996 it was converted to a training ship, an underwater sonar dome removed, reengined and accommodations increased from 108 to 302 for the Maine Maritime Academy. She was delivered to the Academy on June 6 1997, going on her first training cruise a week later. |
