MORAN awaits delivery of two, new double-hull oil barges MORAN will take delivery of two new double-hull oil barges within the next 18 months. Both units are under multi-year contract with Conoco-Philips, delivering products from East Coast refineries. The new 110,000-barrel barges are designed by Corning Townsend of Rowayton, Conn., and are being built by Bay Shipbuilding Co., Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. Each barge, measuring 425 feet in length, will be capable of carrying 17,000 tons of cargo in 10 separate tanks. "This is another step in our company’s barge modernization program," said Bruce Richards, Vice-President of MORAN’s Transportation Division. "Earlier this year we introduced the new barge Tennessee, and now we’ve got these two new barges under construction. We’re also looking at a double hulling project involving our barge Massachusetts," he added. MORAN currently operates a fleet of 28 barges of various sizes and configurations including more than a dozen petroleum barges. The two new barges under construction will be the first in MORAN’s fleet to be fitted with an articulated coupling system. The system, provided by Intercontinental Engineering of Kansas City, Missouri, allows a tugboat to remain fixed in the barge notch, but still capable of pitching motion independent of the barge. Two MORAN tugs will be retrofitted to carry the Intercon coupler system in time for the introduction of each new barge, according to Richards. "We think it’s the right thing to do with modern barge design," said Richards. "The coupler system will give us greater control and maneuverability and it will allow our tugs to make greater speed pushing loaded barges in a wide range of weather conditions." The two new barges will effectively be replacing the existing and similarly-sized barges, Floridaand Texas, both of which are due to be phased out, according to OPA’90 regulations, by 2005 and 2006. Meanwhile MORAN’s 145,000 barrel oil barge Massachusetts is being retrofitted to accommodate a Bludworth articulated connection system which will make it compatible with the 7,200 hp twin-screw tug Paul T. Moran which the company acquired in mid-2003. MORAN's newest barge, the 80,000-barrel Tennessee, has been operating under contract to Shell Oil Co., servicing the Shell refinery in at Yabacoa on the south coast of Puerto Rico. |
