January, 2005 Moran Towing of Charleston Wins Evergreen Vendor of the Year Award Evergreen America Corporation has named Moran Towing of Charleston its Tugboat Company of the Year. Tim West, Moran's Vice President in charge of the Charleston division, accepted the award on behalf of the company this past December. The award acknowledges service Moran provided to Evergreen's marine transportation division in 2003; that division, Evergreen Marine Corporation, is a leading international carrier of marine freight. "Tugboat Company of the Year" is one of a series of awards that comprises Evergreen America's Vendor of the Year awards program. The awards recognize excellence in quality, service, and support in a given category; the tugboat service category recognizes outstanding safety, responsive customer service and operational adaptability. In announcing the award, Thomas Chen, Evergreen's president, acknowledged Moran's role in helping Evergreen meet and exceed its customers' expectations, and wrote that Moran's "consistent, high-level of performance in comparison to [its] competitors has earned this award." Bob Barry, Moran of Charleston's General Manager, credits the efforts of Moran's crews and shore teams, its 24-hour/7-day-a-week operation, and its uniquely designed tugs as primary contributors to its success. "The Elizabeth Turecamo was specially designed and built to meet Evergreen's needs," he observed, referring to the 6,100 horsepower, Z-drive tractor tug that is a workhorse of the Charleston fleet. Moran provides ship docking, harbor towing and escort service for an average of 104 Evergreen container ships a year. The vessels vary in size, with the largest among them spanning over 900 feet in length. In addition to the Evergreen award, Moran has earned numerous commendations from the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard. "The awards reflect the ongoing fulfillment of Moran's mission of providing a service that is valued by our customers," commented Ned Moran, the company's senior vice president. "Evergreen's award is deeply appreciated and a high honor to everyone at Moran."
