Continued Growth for Moran LNG ship-docking services Moran Towing Corp. was recently awarded two new LNG tanker services contracts, continuing its role as the nation’s leading provider of tugboat services to LNG terminals. In 2006 Moran contracted to provide tug services and related ship assistance expertise for two LNG terminals that are currently under construction. The first terminal is located in Freeport, Texas, the second terminal is located near the Mexican port of Ensenada on the Baja Peninsula. These two operations are expected to be up and running in the near future. Moran already provides more ship assist services at LNG terminals than any other U.S. company with operations at Cove Point on Chesapeake Bay and at Elba Island on the Savannah River in Georgia. At the end of 2006 Moran and Compania Maritima del Pacifico S.A. de C.V. announced that their joint venture company, Servicios Maritimos de Baja California, S. de R.L. de C.V. had signed a long-term Marine Services Agreement to provide tugs and other marine vessels to assist LNG vessels calling at the Energía Costa Azul LNG Import Terminal, which is being constructed at a site located approximately 15 nautical miles WNW of the port of Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico. The customers, in addition to the Terminal Owner, Energía Costa Azul, S. de R.L. de C.V., are Shell Mexico Gas Natural, S. de R.L. de C.V., Sempra LNG Marketing Corp. and the Tangguh LNG parties. The four FiFi-1 escort tugs, with 75 tons bollard pull, were designed by Robert Allan of Vancouver, Canada, and are under construction at Union Naval Shipyard of Valencia, Spain. Union Naval Shipyard, one of the world’s leading ship builders, is owned by Grupo Boluda of Madrid, Spain. Initial services for that new contract are to commence in 2008. Earlier in 2006, Moran along with two other Texas-based tugboat companies signed a long term contract to provide ship assist services at a new LNG terminal presently under construction on Quintana Island near Freeport, Texas. The $700 million terminal there is being constructed by Freeport LNG, a limited partnership, which will own and operate the terminal, located about 70 miles south of Houston. Operations could begin by the end of 2008. The first phase of the Freeport project includes two 160,000 cubic meter containment tanks, one berth for LNG tankers of up to 260,000 cubic meters capacity, plus related vaporization and pipeline capability. Regulatory approval for expansion plans has already been received and will include an additional ship-berth, a third storage tank and additional vaporization capability. The facility is described as being the first new land-based LNG terminal completed in the United States in close to 30 years. Capacity of the first phase of this project has been sold on a longterm basis to ConocoPhillips and the Dow Chemical Co. The site is located approximately six miles from open water off a ship channel that is maintained at a depth of 45 feet. This six-mile approach is one of the shortest of any LNG terminals currently operating or under construction in North America. The channel as well as the berth is sufficient to accommodate all existing LNG carriers as well as the largest vessels currently planned for construction. |
