January, 2005 Moran introduces z-drive tractor tug to Philadelphia Moran has permanently stationed the 4,200 hp z-drive tractor tug Surrie Moran at the port of Philadelphia. It is the company's first tractor-style tug in the centuries-old seaport on the Delaware River. The 92-foot Surrie Moran, launched in 2001, was the sixth in a series of the company's Marci-class tugs, all of which were built at Washburn & Doughty Shipyard in Maine for ship-assist work for the Navy in Norfolk, Virginia. Although the Navy renewed its Norfolk contract with Moran in 2004, a realignment of tractor tug assets resulted in this particular tug being made available for commercial service at the end of the year. To prepare the vessel for service in Philadelphia, she underwent a period of refurbishment at Colona's Shipyard in Norfolk, receiving a new Markey hawser winch on her bow, and benefiting from upgraded interior accommodations and fendering. "We had been waiting for a chance to introduce one of our most modern tugboats to this port and now she is really doing a great job for us," said John Gazzola, vice president and general manager of Moran's Philadelphia division. The company currently has five tugs stationed in Philadelphia which is the nation's second busiest oil port, with seven refineries located on the Delaware, according to Gazzola. Charlie O’Brien, a veteran tug skipper with previous tractor tug experience, took over as captain of the Surrie Moran, with John Fenney serving as relief skipper. Both captains underwent training with other Moran tractor tugs in Norfolk, while experienced skippers from Norfolk, Charleston and Savannah, spent time in Philadelphia last fall, introducing local crewmembers to the intricacies of tractor tug operations. "We're using techniques for ship assist now that we could never have done before," said O'Brien. "Our local docking pilots love working with the boat. It's pretty clear that everyone benefits from having this type of equipment available, including me since I get to be its operator most of the time." Moran, now operates z-drive tractor tugs in five East Coast ports. Its fleet of 13 tractors, with two additional z-drives under construction, is the largest on the Eastern Seaboard and among the largest in the U.S. |
