Moran Continues Barge Fleet Expansion Moran Towing Corp. has committed to a further enlargement of its double-hull tank barge fleet with contruction of two new 118,000-barrel barges to be completed over the next two years by Bay Shipbuilding, Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. These new barges will be sister-vessels to the New Hampshire and Georgia, built by the same shipyard and introduced in 2004 and 2005. Moran, which operates 30 barges and 82 tugs on the East and Gulf Coasts, expects to have a 100 percent double-hulled tank barge fleet by the end of 2006. Moran will also build two new ocean-going, SOLAS-rated tugs to be paired with the new barges, using an Intercon articulated coupler system which allows the tugs to remain almost permanently in the notch of its barge. Including these two units, the company will be operating five articulated tug-barge units. The new barges will measure 425 feet in length with 10 cargo compartments featuring an onboard heating system to maintain consistent heated cargo temperature. Moran is currently contructing two barges for delivery in 2006. The first barge is a 14,500 ton covered, ocean-going dry-bulk barge; the second barge is a 60,000 barrel ocean-going, double-hull tank barge. Both barges are being built by Bollinger Shipyards of Louisiana. The first new barge will be delivered in late spring, and is a 418-foot dry bulk barge (to be christened Montville). The Montville joins the other six ocean-going dry bulk barges in MORAN's fleet, and will primarily move coal from Baltimore to an electric production plant operated by Applied Energy Services (AES) in Uncasville on Connecticut's Thames River. The 418-foot barge carries cargo in one large covered hold, with its own self-contained crane for removing and storing hatch covers. Introduction of the 418-foot Montville will increase MORAN's fleet of dry bulk barges to seven vessels ranging from 14,500 tons to 27,000 tons capacity.
