Moran Charleston Upgrades to Cleaner Fuel Moran Charleston has responded to the South Carolina State Ports Authority's (SPA) "Pledge for Growth" sustainability challenge by switching to cleaner-burning fuels in half of its tug fleet. The tugs making the transition are the 6,140 hp, Z-drive tractor Elizabeth Turecamo and the 3,000 hp, twin screw Cape May. The Elizabeth will now run on ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel (ULSD). The Cape May will use a B20 biodiesel/ULSD blend. The switch to ULSD will result in an estimated 10 percent reduction in particulate matter emissions; the B20/ULSD blend is estimated to reduce emissions of particulate matter by 9 percent, carbon monoxide by 10 percent, and hydrocarbons by 21 percent. Moran's usage of the ULSD fuel complies with a federal mandate three years ahead of the Government's deadline. The SPA's "Pledge for Growth" program has met with encouraging success in sparking commitments to environmental sustainability among the region's maritime companies, organizations and government agencies. In addition to the Moran tugs, local vessels, vehicles and equipment now using ULSD fuel include: pilot boats operated by the Charleston Branch Pilots Association; locomotives operated by the South Carolina Public Railways; terminal-based loading equipment operated by the SPA itself; and numerous vessels and equipment owned and operated by tenants of the Port of Charleston. |
