May, 2005 MORAN commended by Commander, United States Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay for timely emergency response and management of the rescue of a runaway drydock on the Delaware River in a period of high winds. Crews and management team cited for averting potential loss of life and a significant environmental pollution incident.
John Gazzola Moran Towing of Pennsylvania Philadelphia Naval Business Center, Building 25 5101 South 15th Street Philadelphia, PA 19112 Dear Mr. Gazzola, I would like to commend the outstanding efforts demonstrated by the personnel of Moran Towing of Pennsylvania. On April 7, 2005, the captains and crew of your vessels, as well as your office personnel, demonstrated superb teamwork by safely setting aside present tasking to engage in a critical situation that developed on the Delaware River. Through swift decisive thinking and maneuvering and with the safety of the port community paramount, your company expeditiously responded and coordinated efforts to gain control of and secure Floating Dry Dock "A" after it broke free from it’s moorings and proceeded to drift upriver towards the T/V ELMERANTA BRIAND, that was being moored at Citgo Paulsboro. In winds as high as 30 knots, the attempt was made to gain control of the dry dock. When the wind and current proved to be too challenging, your company enlisted the aid of multiple tug companies and the docking pilots. After all the tugs involved had engaged the dry dock, efficient control was gained and movement toward the dry dock’s original moorings began. While sacrificing fuel and man-hours, your tugs remained on scene to hold the dry dock in place until new moorings could be obtained and put into place. The efforts of your company to coordinate the safe recovery of the dry dock helped prevent a potential danger to life and the surrounding environment. Overall, your support of the safety and security of the river during this eight and a half hour evolution is hardily commended and is a superior example of the quality of the maritime community along the Delaware River. Situations like this bring pride to us and demonstrate the synergetic relationship that the maritime industry and the U. S. Coast Guard possess. I look forward to continuing our strong working relationship. Once again thank you for a job well done.
