MORAN safety record cited by national panel MORAN was among six companies in the U.S. maritime industry receiving a Safe Working Practices Award recently from American Maritime Safety Inc. (AMS), a national safety advocacy organization. The award singled out MORAN and its employees for its excellent safety record and for its reputation in the industry, with judges significantly influenced by feedback received from U.S. Coast Guard marine safety officials, according to Louis Meltz, president of the 18-year-old New York-based non-profit organization. Michael Brokaw, MORAN's administrator of Quality, Safety, Security and Environmental Department, accepted the award presented October 20, 2005, at the Yale Club in New York. "A good safety record is usually the result of an intense program of training, education and management and I know that everyone at MORAN is proud to be recognized for this recognition of what we have accomplished," said Brokaw. Other companies receiving the AMS award this year included Crowley Maritime, Keystone Shipping, Liberty Maritime, Interocean Ugland and Alaska Tankers. AMS, which counts 387 maritime companies among its members, has presented the safety awards at its annual membership meeting for a dozen years. An independent advisory board with close relationship with the Coast Guard, chooses award winners each year. The award specifically cites each company for "implementation of safe working practices for vessel personnel that serve to promote the safe navigation and operation of vessels in U.S. ports," according to Louis Meltz.
