November, 2004 Moran Towing in Portsmouth, N.H. advances Dick Holt, Jr. Moran Towing Corporation, one of the oldest and largest tugboat and towing service companies in the United States, announced recently that Dick Holt Jr., has joined its division in Portsmouth, N.H., as Assistant General Manager. Holt, 40, will work closely with Robert N. Stewart, Vice President and General Manager of the division. Members of the Holt family, who have served as state pilots and docking pilots in Portsmouth for three generations, have a long tradition of involvement with Moran. "Dick has been involved with Moran since he graduated from Maine Maritime Academy in 1986, and he has served very capably on tugs in ports from Texas to New Hampshire," said Ned Moran, senior vice president and head of harbor services for the Connecticut-based company. "Dick and his father and his grandfather, all serving as pilots, have been valued contributors to Moran operations for many years and we look forward to a continuation of that relationship." Moran's Portsmouth division is home base for four tugboats. In a typical year those tugs provide river escort and ship docking service to vessels calling at the deep-water port located on the Piscataqua River on the New Hampshire-Maine border. Lead tug in the Moran fleet there is the twin screw, 3,200 hp Mary Coppedge. She is one of two Portsmouth tugs outfitted with underwater fendering suitable for assisting both nuclear and conventionally-powered submarines arriving at the nearby Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Ship calls at Portsmouth include Liquid Propane Gas (LPG) tankers, which deliver their high-profile cargo to a gas storage facility upriver in Newington. All four tugs in Moran's local fleet are required for each movement of an LPG tanker. Moran Towing was founded in 1860 in New York. The company's distinctive white 'M' insignia, displayed on the smoke stack of its tugs, is a fixture in more than a dozen ports along the East and Gulf coasts of the U.S. Moran has operations in ship docking and general towing as well as marine transportation, contract towing and maritime-related environmental services. |
