The town of Brunswick was founded in 1771, when Georgia was still a royal colony of the British. In 1789, with the newly formed State of Georgia basking in its independence, the town was officially designated a port of entry by an act of the United States Congress. Brunswick was later incorporated as a city, in 1856. Today, the Port of Brunswick is an acknowledged productivity leader among U.S. east coast ports. It specializes in the handling of breakbulk, agribulk and RoRo cargoes. Import and export cargoes making their way through the port include: automobiles; heavy equipment; machinery; wood pulp; liner board; paper products; wheat; corn; soybeans; animal feed; gypsum; limestone; perlite; salt; sand, and cement, among other goods. One of two deep-water ports in Georgia (the other is Savannah), Brunswick comprises several terminals owned by the Georgia Ports Authority. These include the Mayor's Point Terminal, Colonel's Island Terminal, and Marine Port Terminals. Colonel's Island includes state-of-the-art RoRo and agribulk facilities. |
Moran's operations in Brunswick commenced in 1998, when the company acquired Turecamo Towing. To meet the growing demands of customer vessels and port operations, we upgraded the horsepower of two Turecamo tugs that were stationed in Brunswick; they currently provide ship docking service to RoRo, bulk and breakbulk vessels. There has been tremendous growth in the car importing and exporting segments of the port’s business, for which its RoRo facilities are ideally equipped. Brunswick is now the sixth largest automobile shipping port in the nation. Breakbulk activity has been growing as well; fiscal year 2006 saw a 34% increase in breakbulk tonnage. Moran tugs also provide assistance with special projects in the port, including bridge construction, dredging and related marine activities. |
