Measured by ship calls and tonnage, busi- ness at the Port of New Orleans is now actually exceeding pre-Hurricane Katrina levels. Cruise ships returned to the port in 2006, and rising import volumes of basic commodities like steel, coffee and natural rubber have fueled significant growth in freight operations. The Port is one of the City of New Orleans' main drivers of com- merce and economic growth, and restor- ing its activity has been crucial in restart- ing the local economy. Situated at the gateway to the Mississippi River — one of five sister ports along the river that collectively handle the most cargo tonnage of any U.S. port — New Orleans is a hub in an extensive, inter- modal transportation network that includes six primary rail routes and key port facilities for some of the nation's largest industries. In addition to commodi- ties and industrial goods, the five Lower Mississippi ports receive much of the grain produced in the American heartland. Moran's River Parishes Company division operates along a 250-mile stretch of the Lower Mississippi, between the Southwest |
Pass Seabuoy and the Port of Baton Rouge. We provide ship docking and related services to seagoing vessels calling at any of the region's five ports, helping the ships negotiate congested channels to ensure maritime safety and the safe transport of cargoes. Vessel types we regularly serve include: • Tankers, carrying crude oil, Liquefied Petroleum Gas, gasoline and a vast assortment of chemicals, to and from refineries along the riverbanks • Reefer ships with food cargoes • Container ships • Grain ships In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, at the request of the Coast Guard, River Parishes tugs were among the first vessels to transit portions of the Lower Mississippi looking for drifting or sunken vessels that could pose hazards to navigation. Tradi- tion, like the river itself, runs strong and deep among the company's crews and shoreside staff; several of the fathers, sons, brothers and cousins in our employ are second or third generation employees. |
