Moran Towing of Virginia has been servicing the Port of Norfolk since 1958 and is the largest tugboat operator in the port. Norfolk has experienced strong growth by virtue of its central location on the Atlantic coastline and its status as the largest natural deepwater port on the East Coast, with easy access to open sea. Over 75 international shipping lines call at Norfolk and the surrounding ports of Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Newport News, Yorktown and outlying terminals. The port's facilities include general cargo terminals, the largest intermodal facility on the east coast, and the largest, most efficient coal exporting facility in the world. To serve the needs of this vibrant hub, Moran maintains one of its largest fleets of tugs and an on-site repair facility. Most of these vessels are ocean class tugs that provide ship docking and sailing services as well as container barge towing in the Chesapeake Bay and coastal area. One such vessel, the 5,000 HP Marion Moran, performs regularly scheduled tows of the Moran barge Virginia from the Mississippi River to Puerto Rico. Two recently acquired push-tugs from Moran’s inland barge division are also operated by the Norfolk division. |
Moran has a long history of providing services to the U.S. Navy, which maintains its largest Naval Base at Norfolk. The Navy has eight Moran Z-Drive tractor tugs operating under long-term charter, performing harbor services at the Norfolk Naval Station and the naval Amphibious Base Little Creek. These include six newly constructed Marci Class tugs, each rated at 4100HP. As one of the 13 operating ports of Moran Towing Corporation, the Virginia division along with all of Moran’s divisions maintains the highest standard of quality in equipment and personnel to serve its customers. It also provides its customers with seamless access to the services of any of the other Moran ports up and down the east coast and the gulf coast from Portsmouth, New Hampshire to Port Arthur, Texas. |
